Where I Interned
For my internship, I mentored under Susan Williams who is the children's ministry leader at The River Church. This is a 4-square denomination church that I have been attending for four years.
What I did
Overall, I partnered with staff and volunteers to organize, plan, and direct Sunday morning classes and outreach events through the scheduling program and audio visual presentation system. For my first semester project, I created an easy accessible presentation system. I used ProPresenter to display bible story videos, music videos, and instructional videos. The purpose for this task was to make Sunday morning elementary class run smoother with no technical issues. Specifically, my tasks were to enter dates, lessons, and events in Trello for teachers to reference for schedule, set-up audio visual system prior to event and manage through the duration of the event, recruit/train colunteers to serve in your absence, and create instructions for new volunteers. For second semester, I herlped organize a big event: The Daddy Daughter Dance. My specific asks were to organize the production, cordinate with performance team to create a detailed schedule for the night, create playlist for event, review all music to sensor for language/themes, recruit team of volunteers to manage sound lights and screen presentation, assist with promotion of event through social media, etc.
Some strengths I discovered that I have is planning and organizing. I knew that I was able to manage small events, but I did not realize my capabilities with larger events. An accomplishment I am proud of is how smoothly the Daddy Daughter Dance went. I thought that there might be some faults in the playlist because of the amount of song recommendations, but everyone at the event seemed pleased with the set up. A challenge I faced was balancing multiple tasks at once. Since this internship was at the end of the school year, I had a lot of tasks I was assigned. It was hard to attend church, organize the DDD, care for my family, and complete other school work. I realized that I need to grow in how I manage multiple tasks. My plans moving forward are to use the skills I learned in my military career, and strengthen my weakness before I go to basic training. This internship was well rounded in terms of skills needed, so I believe that it will be useful in all future careers no matter what. I’m planning on going straight into the military so I know these skills will be extremely helpful. No matter what career or hobby or life path I travel, this internship will have benefited me.
